The Hierophant Tarot

What is the Hierophant Tarot

The Hierophant (V) is the 5th card in a suit of twenty-two cards, called the trumps or the Major Arcana in a traditional 78-card tarot deck. Also called Chiron, the Pope, the High Priest and the Shaman, it is used both in game playing as well as in divination.

How is the Hierophant in the Tarot Card Depicted

Holding up two fingers with one hand, and clasping a golden staff with 3 crossbars in the other, the Hierophant appears seated on a stone throne between 2 big grey pillars. On his head is an ornate crown with 3 tiers, his body is covered by a red robe with white trim and his feet are within white shoes. There are crosses on the white trim as well on his shoes that rest on a red carpet. 2 bald men, one wearing a robe with red roses and another in a dress full of white lilies kneel before him and in between are a golden and a silver key in an X pattern.

What Does the Hierophant Mean in the Tarot Card

The Hierophant symbolizes tradition and is indicative of the success you’d achieve by wisely following a guided path. The two fingers of his right hand stand for peace, while the other seeks to channelize heavenly power through him down to his disciples, whose kneeling positions reveal how they want spiritual assistance. The red roses on the robe of one indicate his eagerness to learn, while the white lilies on the other reflect his mind’s purity. The triple crown of the Hierophant standing for the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit or Mind, Body, and Spirit depicts his sway over the 3 worlds, and the crossed keys strike a balance lying between the conscious and unconscious mind. His ruling planet is Venus and element is earth.
