The Strength Tarot

What is the Strength Tarot

The Strength Tarot is the eighth (VIII) card in a suit of twenty-two cards, called the trumps or the Major Arcana, in a traditional 78-card tarot deck, used for both playing and divination. It is associated with the Leo zodiac. Traditionally, it is the eleventh card while the Justice Tarot comes in the eighth position. However, current tarot reading follows the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, where their positions have been switched to comply with the astrological standards set by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Her element is fire and ruling planet is Sun.

How is the Strength Depicted in the Tarot Card

The Strength represents a woman clad in a white robe embellished with a flower belt and a floral crown on her head, patting a lion on its forehead and lower jaw under a golden sky. Above her head floats lemniscates. She stands on a grassy landscape with blue mountains in the background and gazes down at the lion wearing a peaceful smile on her face. It appears as if she has successfully tamed it.

What Does the Woman in the Strength Tarot Card Mean

The Strength symbolizes a triumphant win over the wicked or evil through love, compassion, and intelligence. The lemniscates is a sign of infinity, also seen in The Magician. The white robe is a symbol of purity, and spirituality, while her flower crown stands for a peaceful mental state. The belt of flowers marks positive outcome of her good deeds. Her left arm represents willpower, and the right arm signifies physical efforts.

The lion embodies beastly instincts and materialistic greed. In the card, it is shown sticking out its tongue and seems happy surrendering to the woman.

The blue mountains suggest stability and internal calmness.

The Strength as a Person (Signifier)

The Strength stands for a female figure who is probably a maiden having a pure heart. Her real energy and vigor do not come completely from muscular strength but also involves her mental tenacity. She is inherent with qualities like courage, balance, sharpness, and kindness.
